Date of Death: November 29th, 2010

Maurice Wilkes was an English Computer Scientist and he had a long lifespan of 97 Years! He studied at St John's College, Cambridge, from 1931 to 1934 and obtained his PhD in Physics in 1936. In 1945, Wilkes was appointed the second director of the University of Cambridge Computer Labortory, where he would begin his computer science developments because of increased funding.

Wilkes was most commonly known for his work on "Electronic Delay Storage Automatic Calculator" (EDSAC for short) noted as one of the earliest stored program computers, and his invention of "Microprogramming". Microprogramming is defined as a method for using stored-program logic to control the central processing unit of a circuit.

Wilkes may not have been at GMU during his computer science career, but he paved the way for further CS development. Find more about GMU's Computer Science Department at cs.gmu.edu
