Pearl River Delta Environmental Study (under construction):

Introduction

From Wiki: "The Pearl River Delta (PRD), Zhujiang Delta or Zhusanjiao in Guangdong province, People's Republic of China is the low-lying area surrounding the Pearl River estuary where the Pearl River flows into the South China Sea. It is on
e of the most densely urbanised regions in the world and one of the main hubs of China's economic growth."

PRD is my hometown, where I was born and grew up. Environmental conditions there have greatly deteriorated since the establishment of the Special Economic Zone, which concerns me. The city of Guangzhou has become a mega city, the 3rd largest in China and  the largest in southern China, with a population of over 15 million. Adding the nearby cities, the total population in PRD is over 40 million, forming the so called Pearl River Delta Mega City. The purpose of this web page is a testbed:

  • To monitor current environmental conditions and changes
  • To understand the environmental changes
  • To understand the environmental impacts due to weather and climate changes
  • To understand the environmental imapcts due to human activities
by integrating and analyzing data from satellite remote sensing technology, model reanalysis and prediction, in-situ observations, etc.

Urbanization in PRD:

Foshan

Shenzhen

Huadu new airport

Recent Tasks

  • Develop a near-real-time monitoring system
  • Establish climatology baselines for environmental variables
  • Develop an annual environmental assessment report
