The structure of this story blows my mind away. It is easy to see how Michael Gentry was nominated for so many awards. The story begins with this girl driving across country with her husband from Texas and feeling completely out of place here in this fishing community.
Through the first few steps you learn more about this girl, and it paints a vivid picture of who you are “playing”.
What is so incredible about this lovecraftanian horror interactive text is that it engrosses you right from the beginning. It relates to the reader by being in an unfamiliar place, with unfamiliar people. Who has not been in that situation? It relates to the reader by being stuck out in the rain and having no place to go, the “common folk” feel allows the reader to take in the story and become a player in the horror puzzle.
I did not make it to the end but the build up of tension from gathering clues and information can only add credibility to the excellent structure of the horror text. I do not know as well if there is more than one type of ending, but as Landow said, “beginnings imply endings, and endings require some sort of formal and thematic closure.” (Landow,227)
