Anchorhead

Anchorhead was written by Michael S. Gentry in 1998, it is much similar to Colossal Cave in that is solely driven by directions and noticing the unnoticeable. The genre of Colossal Cave is adventure while the genre of Anchorhead is horror.

I am sure that there are better interactive fiction stories out there, but Anchorhead is an interactive hypertext fiction to the utmost. When playing Anchorhead I felt a part of the story, where as in Colossal Cave disorientation reigned supreme and a grasp of the story was lost when I got lost.

The interactive text of Anchorhead uses colorful vocabulary to paint a small town in New England. Ease in both typing directions and understanding the purpose of the game is beautifully programmed into the text. When playing these text based games it is hard to not compare them to today’s standard of computer games but this game hold it’s own with the structure of the story and captivating clues that lead you on a goose chase throughout the town. Even with this game almost being a decade old, the reader can still visualize it in today’s world, which is a good sign of a captivating interactive text. With the combination of good vocabulary, ease of understanding and directions this interactive text is attractive and addictive.
