A critical component of designing instructional opportunities for students is that of the "authentic problem". An authentic problem provides the students with a context in which to situate their learning experiences.
One of the 'fringe benefits' of being an instructor in the ITS Cohort is that I am sometimes called upon to visit the ITS students' classrooms in order to participate in the implementation of the authentic problem.
One of our students had her kindergarten classes design "Insect Museums" for a visiting representative of the Natural Museums. I interacted with the students as Dr. "B" Hive.
One of the ITS students designed a math unit around having the students design "A Perfect School". I was asked to visit the class representing the "School Community Action Board". I 'enlisted' the students' help in designing a new school for the county.
