All About Me

Grade Level: - 4 - 6

Content Area: Language Arts

Overall Description: The students will use HyperStudio to create a 3 card stack about themselves. The final product for this activity is will be presented at Back to School night. The first card will have the students name and picture, the second card will contain information about the students favorite things, and the final card will contain information about the student's family.

Materials:

    • HyperStudio program
    • 3 Index cards for each student. Prepunch 2 holes on the bottom left and right of each card.
    • 2 pieces of string - 4 inches long per student
    • drawing materials
    • Presentation device for explanation (not necessary, but helpful)

Objectives -

    • The student will.....
    • create a HyperStudio stack.
    • import a digital picture into HyperStudio.
    • write a description about themselves.
    • write a description about their family.

Before the lesson:

    • create an All About Me stack describing yourself using the criteria in the description.
    • take a digital picture of each individual student

Procedure -

    1. Introduce HyperStudio to the class by showing them one of the premade stacks in the program. Discuss the idea of creating a stack of cards to show information. Discuss other ways to use the program.
    2. Describe the All About Me activity by showing the premade stack about yourself.
    3. Discuss the elements of a card: background, graphics, clip art, buttons and text.
    4. Give each student 3 index cards. Starting with card 1, show the students how to create each element of the card using your stack as an example. Explain that they will draw a background, import their picture, and type their name and add a button to the next card.
    5. Have each student actually create their card on the index card using art supplies.
    6. Move to card 2. Show the students how to create each element of the card using your stack as an example. Explain that they will make a background, add clip art or draw pictures to show their favorite activities, write a paragraph in a text box and add a button to move to the next card.
    7. Move to card 3. Show the students how to create each element of the card using your stack as an example. Explain that they will make a background, add clip art or draw pictures to illustrate their family, write a paragraph in a text box and add a button to move to the next card.
    8. Using the string, attach the cards in the correct order. Discuss how the string represents the buttons that will move them from one card to another.
    9. Go through your premade stack again, eliciting all the necessary elements from the students.
    10. Move the students to the computer. Allow them ample time to create the stack.
    11. When all students are finished, compile all the individual stacks into a bigger stack. Make one stack for every 5 students.
    12. Create a slide show of all the stacks to show at Back to School Night to introduce the class to the parents.

Evaluation -

    • The student will be evaluated using the following components:
    • Completion of All About Me stack.
    • Correct transitions between cards.
    • Proper spelling, grammar, mechanics within the paragraphs.
