English 505 - Publications

Building a publication is a lot like putting up a building. It takes a foundation, and the whole is only as strong as the parts.

This course has as its fundamental goal nothing less than changing the way you read the world. The course affords you the chance to understand the relationship between text and graphics and space, whether those elements are printed on a piece of paper or appear on a computer screen. The course affords you insights into the aesthetics and psychological aspects of publications design, allows you to gain experience at designing publications, and gives you feedback on your own designs. Plus, finally, it also allows you to develop greater proficiency with computers and publications-design software, though it will do that more by driving you toward the computers than it will by taking you in hand and leading you there. This is, after all, a university course.

This is not a course in graphic arts. It is for writers and  editors who, like everyone else, are finding the world of their work changes most every day.

The structure of the course alternates between theory discussion sessions and workshop presentations. There also are three theory papers and one major research paper. The grade is determined by your work on the papers and the portfolio of design work you compile over the course of the semester.
