Causes of epilepsy:
- Inheritance: In the past, many people
believed that inheritance was a
major
factor to the extent that "in some states of America and in some Scandinavian countries it was
illegal for people with epilepsy to marry"(26 Hopkins). This statute lasted until 1969 (sands) when
researchers found that inheritance is not a huge factor in the cause of epilepsy.
- Congenital
malformation: One congenital malformation related to epilepsy is "a maldevelopment of blood vessels
known as an angioma. Children with a particular combination of angiomatous abnormalities have a
high probability of developing seizure"(31 hopkins).
- Lack of enough oxygen
- Trauma
- Tumors
- Infectious diseases: i.e. Bacterial Meningitis (hopkins)
- A lot of times, the
cause of a person's epilepsy is unknown. Doctors then work in determining what type of epilepsy a
person has in order to give the best treatment.
