Tips for developing a classroom blog

  • Suggestions for implementing blogs (Ferdig and Trammell).
    1. Consider starting your own blog
    2. Spend time visiting other classroom blogs (Google and SchoolBlogs are good resources for this)
    3. Model blogging for your students
    4. Make the blogs more public (if you are comfortable with this idea in your classroom and school environment)
    5. Make sure your students know the scope and reach of their blogs (never record in writing what you might not want anyone to know)
  • Visit various blogging sites (listed on the links page) and determine which service appeals to you and what type of blog you would like to create (public or private)
  • Obtain permission from the Administration of your school and the parents of your students.
  • Provide concrete directions for your students, modeling the steps necessary to create a blog account.
  • Blog project ideas (see Barclay Barrios' site for more on this - the following are his suggestions)
    • Journal Blogs - replace classroom journaling with online journaling.
    • Collaborative Blogs - have small groups post details of their progress and findings.
    • Research Blogs - this works well during the development of a research paper or science project.
    • Class Blogs - create a class homepage that allows student interaction.
