Blogging Considerations

Concerns inherent in the online community

  • Most of the research on classroom blogging is heavily collegiate; not all of it is appropriate to the K-12 environment.
  • Public vs. private blogs - do you want outside attention? Several blog providers (listed on the links page) allow the option of making your blog a private, invite-only web log.
  • As the blogging phenomenon continues to grow, censorship may become an issue (see weblogg-ed for more on this).
  • Not all of your students will respond well to blogging. Develop strategies to assist in motivating the reluctant blogger.
  • Time constraints - how much time do you want to devote to the reading and evaluation of your students' blogs?
