Using HLM software can be frustrating.  There are several steps to making the MDMT files and, sometimes, even when you've done it all correctly, you get an error message.  Here I've written up some instructions on how to make a proper MDMT file with as few errors as possible.  Likewise, newcomers sometimes don't know how to do a cross-level interaction.  Here is a set of instructions on how to do so.


Even after someone has found a significant interaction, many people struggle with how to plot interactions.  Kevin Grimm at UC-Davis came up with this helpful Excel file that works every time. Just copy over some values from your output files and it does the rest.
