The Internet is the largest and most well-known computer network, linking millions of computers all over the world. It has entirely revolutionized the computer technology. It was created in 1969 as a Defense Department experimental network called ARPANET(Advanced Research Project Agency Network). It evolved from a tool used only by government and university researchers into a tool used by millions all over the world for communication, information, entertainment and e-business with the improvement of technology and especially with the development of the World Wide Web. This former is a collection of interconnected websites or pages of text, graphics, audio, and video within the Internet. So, the Internet users enlarged because of the World Wide Web but also because the access of Internet became cheaper and easier. The Internet utilizes a common set of protocols. TCP/IP(Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) is an example of a protocol. It is used on the Internet to transfer data over the Internet. To access the Internet, a user needs a computer (PC), modem, and an Internet Service Provider (ISP), which is an organization that provides access to the Internet through its own series of local networks. Every computer on the Internet has its unique IP address. People access the Internet mainly for:
-Communication
by exchanging e-mail, information, chatting,… People can do instant messaging by using instant messaging services such as AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger,...
-Information
by using search sites such as google.com or search engines to access a vast range of topics. People can also search online reference materials like encyclopedias, atlases and online publications such as The New York Times. People can also use online education to learn more things.
-Entertainment
by listening to or downloading music, watching online TV or videos, playing games online, reading e-books.
-E-business
by making online financial activities, transactions, such as shopping, banking.
After the Internet came a new computer technology innovation, an intranet. This is a network of computers very similar to the Internet that is available only to people inside an organization. That’s the way businesses can communicate together.
