However, there are some negative aspects of the use of CGI in films. One thing is that since the use of CGI is well known, it is expected in movies. It can be overused and misused, which reflects negatively on the movie. The success of computer-generated special effects in movies is when it is used in a way that does not look fake. If the CGI makes the movie bad by making the actor's actions look fake, then it will hurt the movie. Recent examples are The Hulk and Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle. According to Bob Longing, people like CGI effects in films, except when it is obvious that it is used. People like what computer animation can do, but want it to blend in seamlessly with the rest of the movie. Sometimes, the over use of computer special effects is that the film relies on the effects rather than the story. This is seen in recent movies The Hulk and Charlie's Angels (Longing). On the other hand, the use of CGI also causes the line between reality and fantasy to blur. According to Telotte, representation now stretches beyond the real due to the idea that people disconnect themselves from reality and live their lives as if they were watching it like a movie. He believes that this happens because computer animation has reached a point where it can lure people into a fantasy world because it looks so realistic. However, Ruben Aquino, a Disney artist states "The important things are the same though; the acting, the action analysis, no matter what medium is used. It's just a different tool (Wloszczyna). That is what filmmakers need to understand. CGI is a tool, nothing else. A movie cannot consist of special effects alone; it needs good acting as well as an intriguing story.
In the animation world, 3-D animation is replacing traditional 2-D animation. Animators are forced to learn how to make 3-D animation or face layoffs. However, these two types of animators are from different worlds. Traditional animators focus on performance by turning their characters into believable actors. On the other hand, 3-D animators tend to try to make the characters and settings look realistic (Huffstutter). Disney has closed its animation studios in Japan and Paris, as well as laid-off artists and given salary cuts. In 2005, Disney will no longer produce feature length 2D animated movies because it has hopped on the bandwagon and condemned traditional animation due to low sales of Treasure Planet and high sales of Finding Nemo (Wloszczyna). Computer animation has caused the death of traditional cel animation because it is a new and exciting technique. Major animation studios and filmmakers see computer animation as the answer to their prayers because it has produced high sales in recent movies like The Incredibles and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
