A large and growing community exists with a deep devotion to the lighthouses of the world. There are enough aficionados of lighthouses to support the existence of magazines, Web sites, and endless merchandise. There are even organizations dedicated to saving decommissioned, neglected, and dilapidated lighthouses.

Although some of these beacons fell victim to neglect or lack of financial support, others succumbed to the relentless abuse administered by the forces of nature. The purpose of my proposed Web site will be to bring back these "lost lighthouses" by presenting documentary evidence of their creation. Using governmental documents from the Department of the Treasury, U.S. Coast Guard, and specifically the Lighthouse Board, I plan to show the development of these structures from planning, financing, and building to its actual lighting.
