Research Ideas - January 2009

White background with pink and dark blue dots and lines that illustrate an area of research.
  • My research ideas from 2007 remain consistent but have jelled.

  • Read&Write GOLD Pilot Study
  • Some possible areas to research are

  • The effect of the following on the use of Assistive Technology (AT):

Teacher mindset-  As requested by the local research department, I have a survey developed that uses some questions from a previous district survey in order to compare teacher attitudes as reflected several years before.

Student mindset- The local research department also requested that I include a student survey with some questions from a previous district survey as a comparison for and extension of the previously collected data.

Parent mindset-  I will address this later.

I have chosen to concentrate on the use of AT for student writing.  Some software features can be used for the regular SOL Written Language Assessment if listed on the student's current Individual Education Plan.  They can also be used for the alternative statewide assessment in Virginia called the Virginia Grade Level Assessment if included in the student's current IEP.  I am in the process of beginning a pilot research study to investigate the effects of students' use of AT software while creating and revising their writing products.

    ·         Statewide Assessment using Assistive Technology-

This idea needs to be focused.

Which states have allowed the use of Assistive Technology during assessment?

    How has it affected scores?

Do those scores accurately reflect student skills and knowledge?

    ·         Effects on students when AT is not ecnouraged or available-

    Pros

    Cons

    Potential good

    Potential harm

    ·         Ways to help teachers transition from dismissal of use to encouraging use-

How to convey potential revalution to

    teachers

    parents

    students

    the community?

    ·         Ways to effect change in current attitudes-
