EDRS 810
Problems and Methods in Educational Research

George Mason University
Spring 2007

  Ocean waves crashing on rocks

Of all the classes in this PhD program the ones that struck terror to my heart as I anticipated registration were the research courses.  The first of such courses was EDRS 810.  With half a century experience in math phobia and difficulties with systematic and sequential thinking, I was convinced that research would be, at best, a definite weakness.  However, with the optimistic encouragement and gentle guidance of the professor, I was able to generate a research proposal for a single subject research design, with assignments such as a completed Human Subjects Review Board application form, consent forms, assent forms, and a method section.   A PowerPoint Presentation was made to the class.

The research questions were:

1.                  Can combination of a word processor, organization software, and word prediction software facilitate an increase in the quantity of words used in a written response?

2.                  Can combination of a word processor, organization software, and word prediction software facilitate a decrease in the number of spelling errors in a written response?

3.                  Can the use of word prediction software augment the level of vocabulary selection used in a written response?

At the end of this class feelings of confidence had grown a bit.
