Function | Step(s) |
To play a VHS tape... | 1. Unlock the padlock on the black cabinet (mounted on the wall on the SIDE of the classroom). |
2. Align the number wheels on the padlock to the correct combination. | |
3. Hold the curved bar with your LEFT hand and the padlock body with your RIGHT hand and push them towards each other to open the lock. | |
4. Move the number wheels so no one else will see the combination. | |
5. Flip the black "POWER" switch on the Volume Control Panel (at the top of the cabinet) "UP" to the "ON" position (so you will have sound when you play a VHS tape, etc.). | |
6. Remove the large gray remote control from the cabinet. | |
7. Move the remote control's "POWER" switch to the "ON" position (located on the RIGHT side). | |
8. Press the "ON" button on the remote control (located on the FRONT) while pointing it towards the video projector mounted on the ceiling. | |
9. Press the "VIDEO1" button on the remote control while pointing it at the video projector. | |
10. Press the "POWER" button on the VCR. | |
11. Insert the tape and press the "PLAY" button on the VCR (unless the tape starts playing automatically). | |
12. Adjust the volume by turning the knob labeled "VHS-AUDIO" on the Volume Control Panel. | |
NOTE: The volume buttons on the remote control will not change the volume. | |
13. Stop the tape by pressing the "STOP" button on the VCR. | |
14. Rewind the tape by pressing "REW" on the VCR. | |
15. Remove the tape by pressing the "EJECT" button on the VCR. | |
To connect your laptop to the Internet... | 1. Connect your laptop's power cable to your laptop. |
2. Insert the power plug into the electrical outlet (located near the black cabinet). | |
3. Connect the 15-pin VGA cable coming from the connection box on the wall (next to the black cabinet) into the "VIDEO OUT" connection on your laptop. | |
NOTE: Often the correct connection is the only one where it fits. | |
4. Plug one end of a network cable into your laptop. | |
NOTE: Some laptops come with a special adapter that links the laptop to the network cable. | |
5. Plug the other end of the network cable into the network jack with the red tab above it (located on the SIDE wall). | |
NOTE: You must set up your laptop to dynamically grab an IP address when you turn it "ON." If you are unfamiliar with how to do this, contact Susan Campbell (scampbel@osf1.gmu.edu) for help. | |
To display your laptop's screen on the projection screen in the front of the room | 1. Unlock the padlock on the black cabinet (mounted on the wall in the FRONT of the classroom). |
2. Align the number wheels on the padlock to the correct combination. | |

9. Press the "DATA1" button on the remote control while pointing it towards the video projector. | |
10. Turn on your laptop. | |
11. After the main Windows screen appears on your laptop, check to see whether you can see the same screen displayed from the video projector. If not, then check your manual to see what key or combination of keys you need to press to display the screen on both the laptop and projection screen. | |
NOTE: Often, you must press the [FN] key and one of the function keys once or twice. Usually, this function key will be labeled "LCD/CRT" or have a picture of a monitor on it. | |
NOTE: The volume buttons on the remote control will not change the volume. |
After class... |
Step 1: Turn off the video projector by pressing the "OFF" button on the gray remote control while pointing it at the video projector. |
Step 2: Turn off the gray remote control by moving the "POWER" switch "DOWN" to the "OFF" position. |
Step 3: Place the gray remote control in the black cabinet. |
Step 4: Turn off the VCR by pressing the "POWER" button. |
Step 5: Flip the black "POWER" switch on the Volume Control "DOWN" to the "OFF" position. |
Step 6: Place the padlock on the black cabinet. |
