Women and Equality
During 1800, women gained better equality than before like men did. A law was passed that married women could take their children who were under age of seven. They also could divorce if their husbands were cruel or left them. They had a right to own properties under their own names. As industry developed, working on farms or in factories depended on both wives and husbands. Women no more had to make own clothes for their family or preserve food because they could buy. Instead, many women worked in textile industry. They gained equal opportunities to work in industry like men did. This fact shows that they took large role during 1800.
As there existed sexual equality, the condition was not exactly the same like men had. Even though they could gain more school education than before, women's jobs were limited to such as teachers or nurses. They worked about the same amount that men did but less wages. Women were allowed to own their properties and pay for debts, but it seems that they might be able to afford it hardly as they got paid less from works. They had to be liable for their properties and debts without their husbands' help like before they got married. Women's properties also had to be recorded if those were sold. They still had problems with voting because many of those who were against voting right for women thought that women were less intelligent and less able to make political decisions than men. They at least could organize conference and talk about this problem.
Women had more rights then before. However, this could not be completely sexual equality. It seems rather unfair. Laws were passed to give women opportunities but the laws did not give them how to maintain their opportunities. They had less wages and this means that they could not afford well for their things and depts. I also found that women had conference for voting rights during this period as they could not participate fully like men.
It is obvious that they believed in God during this period and they read Bible. However, they understood wrong about it. If they really meant to give women rights equally, they would consider that men and women were created equal, so they have the same ability. All my thoughts and facts during the period could be the same problem that many of women argue today. Of course that much more of women take a large role now than they did before. They take their babies to childcare centers, go to market to buy various kinds of foods and clothes, and participate in various positions but men still take more part in those positions and these seem the reasons that why women still argue for equality.
