The U.S. Navy began exploring the polar regions in the early 19th century and maintained a prominent role in expeditions throughout the 20th century.

As early as 1839, Lieutenant Charles Wilkes led the first U.S. Naval expedition into Antarctic waters.

Admiral Byrd and Antarctica

Richard E. Byrd's began exploring polar regions in 1924 and spent 29 years exploring Antarctica. He continued journeying to the Antarctic until his death in 1957.

Byrd began his career in the U.S. Navy at the Naval Academy.
