Publishing Image Documents On-Line

To display text and images on a website, you must establish an account and create a subdirectory in which images may be published. The GMU labs and ITU web documents can assist you.

Programs such as Netcape® or Microsoft FrontPage® have automated publishing procedures. These programs require a one-time set-up that indicates your account information to be placed in the "publish to" box. The information will be "ftp:" followed by mason.gmu.edu/home/[directory]/username/public_html/[filename.extension]. After set-up, the only information needed will be your password. Notice that Netscape® permits the user to publish at once all of the files (images, for example, or sound files) associated with the web page; choose this option.

It is also possible to upload text and images via FTP (file transfer protocol). The Winsock FTP® program is available for download and is efficient.

The FTP screen lists files on the user's machine in the left pane and the mainframe files in the right pane. Directional arrows copy the files from one location to the other. When uploading non-text or mixed files, be sure to select the "binary" option.

File uploaded via FTP must have permission granted. Using Telnet to open your account, move to your subdirectory (at the prompt type: cd public_html),write: chmod 644 [filename].[extension]. You can list multiple filenames, each separated by a space, for both images and texts. Once you exit your account, you can check permissions by typing in the location in Netscape Navigator® or Microsoft Internet Explorer®. If you have not granted permission for a text file you will get an error message. If you have not granted permission for an image, a generic symbol appears instead of the image.

Note: image files can be quite large and may eventually exceed a user's account quota, so delete non-current files.
