Rachel Stierle

Hard-Working, Diligent, Perfectionist

About Me

Hello, my name is Rachel Stierle and I am a student at George Mason University. I am an English major with a concentration in Writing and Rhetoric. I spend most of my free time reading for fun and developing my writing skills, both my creative writing and nonfiction writing. In the future, once out of college, I hope to gain a career within the publishing industry and eventually become an editor or a professional writer.

Resume

Below is some information about my past and current experiences in the workforce. I currently do not have any experience within the publishing industry. However, I do have some experiences and skills that might be useful within the workforce.

JSI Telecom Inc.

During the summer from 2012–2015, I worked as a secretary at JSI Telecom, filling in for the receptionist duirng her time away as well as when she was hospitalized.
Because of this job, I gained experience within a professional environment.

  • Filing documents
  • Professional Writing Skills
  • Transferring phone calls
  • Doing simplebookbinding.

Ashby Ponds

Since 2013, I have worked as a server at Ashby Ponds, an independent living facility run by Erickson Living. I began as a server in the restaurant, and after two years went to work in the cafeteria.
As a result of this job, I have:

Time In The Restaurant

During my first two years at Ashby Ponds, I worked in the restaurant, which was a fine dining room filled with over sixty tables, ranging from two person tables to those fitting up to eight people. While there, I was able to develop many useful skills:

  • Developed professional communication skills between myself and customers.
  • Gained leadership skills by taking charge of the restaurant when needed
  • Enhanced my management skills in a fast–paced environment
  • Gained insight into how professional businesses are run.

Time In The Cafe

In July of 2017, I will have worked in the cafe of Ashby Ponds for approximately two years. Those skills that I have developed within the restaurant have been heightened and strengthened while within the cafe.

While I do not have much experience as a professional within the field that I am pursuing, I feel confident that my skills would benefit me enough that I could succeed in my future career.

If I had to characterize myself, I would say that I am very hard-working, diligent, and always willing to help others without being asked to do so. I admit that I am a perfectionist, wanting to complete my work as best as I possibly can, and thus I am constantly encouraged to work harder to succeed.

Portfolio

Thus far I have been very fortunate to create many different types of online content.
This includes a YouTube video I made for my HIST 121 course while at NOVA, an online exhibit I researched for and created for my HIST 375 course at GMU, as well as a rough webpage that I have made in my ENGH 375 course at GMU. This also includes a People and Places essay I wrote for my ENGH 399 course.

History 121 Youtube Video

For this assignment, I was assigned to work with a group of two other students to discuss a topic chosen by our professor. We were given the Seneca Falls Declaration, which discusses women's rights compared to men's rights. We were told to create a YouTube video that would contain all of our content information as well as include images. It had to be both informative and entertaining.

To view the Seneca Falls Declaration video I researched for and created, check out this YouTube page.

History 375 Omeka Website

For this course, I was told to create a website that discussed an interesting topic about the Appalachian Trail. I chose to discuss the 1996 double murder that occured right off of Skyline Drive, near Luray, Virginia. I had to research my own content, find my own primary sources, and obtain permission to use sources for users to view.

To visit my online exhibit about the Double Murder on the Appalachian Trail, check out Appalachian Trail Histories. You can also view the rest of the webpage by clicking here.

English 375 Webpages

This course is quite fun because it asks me to create my own website with my own content. Below is my very first website that I created.

To view my first webpage for my ENGH 375 course, go to this link.

Other Webpages from ENGH 375

I have since created two more webpages that are much better than the first. Here is my second‐ever webpage that I created: Module 1. Here is the third webpage I created, which is a newer version of the above webpage: Module 2

I have also been working on this very page for this ENGH 375 course. This is my first real fleshed out website and I am very pleased to present this to the world.

English 399 Work

For this course I wrote a short nonfiction piece about the Ashburn Library, and how the people of the library shape the actual place. To read it, click here.
