Roger Mellen just completed his doctoral work in the George Mason University History Department. His emphasis is on origins of free press and colonial Virginia print culture. His dissertation is, "A Culture of Dissidence: The Emergence of Liberty of the Press in Pre-Revolutionary Virginia." Before returning to school, Mellen was Visiting Assistant Professor in Journalism and Coordinator of the Electronic Journalism Minor at George Mason University. He came to GMU after 2 ½ years as an Assistant Professor at American University and more than 20 years as a professional journalist.

Mellen has worked in television news, online journalism and radio, including as: Senior Producer, WJLA-TV. Washington, DC, Assistant News Director, WHTM-TV, Harrisburg, PA, Producer, WCNC-TV, Charlotte, NC, Assignment Editor, WJBK-TV, Detroit, Producer/Assignment Editor, WKZO-TV (WWMT), Kalamazoo, MI, Producer, WVUE-TV, New Orleans, Tape Editor, Writer, Tape Operations Manager, Satellite News Channel, Stamford, CT, Tape Editor, Video Journalist, CNN, Atlanta, and Associate Producer (Reporter, Anchor, Photographer, Editor) WSKG-TV, Binghamton, NY. He has won many awards for newscasts he has produced, including Associated Press, UPI, and NATAS (Regional Emmy).

His B.A. is in Broadcast Journalism from Hampshire College, his M.A. in Mass Communication from the University of Denver.

Mellen just completed hiking the entire 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail in segments; a little each year. It took more than 30 years to complete!
