Explore this site and learn about the life and legacy of Captain Sally Louisa Tompkins, Angel of the Confederacy. After the First Battle of Manassas, Sally Tompkins opened the Robertson Hospital in Richmond where she and her staff of doctors treated the Confederate wounded. Unlike most hospitals of the period, she insisted on cleanliness and sanitation for both her patients and staff. As a result, her hospital had the lowest mortality rate of any military hospital during the Civil War, both Union and Confederate. In recognition of her efforts, she was awarded an officer's commission as a captain in the Confederate States Army by President Jefferson Davis. Her story demonstrates the significant contributions of countless Southern women who gave of their time, talent, and treasure from Fort Sumter to Appomattox.
