This website was developed as a final project for History 697, Creating History in New Media, taught by Professor Paula Petrik at George Mason University, Spring 2004. The content and some of the images appeared previously in the Magazine of History, Winter 2002. An earlier version of the essay on Sally Tompkins appeared in The Washington Times (September 1, 2001). I am indebted to the research staff at the Virginia Historical Society for their assistance with this project.
I wish to acknowledge the invaluable technical support provided by Sayma Saleem and Chrissie Brodigan, my friends and colleagues at George Mason University. With their able assistance, a difficiult and frustrating project became a wonderful learning experience. That said, any errors of content or design remain my sole responsibility.
