The record industry has put so much energy into preventing unauthorized music downloads that they have ignored the problematic aspects of their solutions. In other words, the cure can be worse than the disease. I agree that music lovers should pay musicians for their work but after purchasing music, consumers deserve, as C. Doctorow said, “A record player that lets me play everybody's records.” (2005) Not being able to play all digital files on all digital players is a problem that the record industry needs to address. Overall, it would be a good business practice for the music industry to offer more choices to their customers. The music industry should focus on ways to use the technology that are mutually beneficial.
