Can Interactive Fiction Be Literature?Based upon the previously established definition of literature, the simulated environments and non-linear, open-ended stories that are created from Interactive Fiction do not necessarily seem to disqualify Interactive Fiction from being considered literature; however, the merit of each individual piece should determine its literary status based upon its ability to make meaningful interpretations of universal interests. For example, separate conclusions could be made about the Interactive Fiction stories of “Adventure” and “Galatea.” While each of these fictional stories uses text commands to control characters through a story plot, I contend that the literary value of "Galatea" is equivalent to that of any other known piece of traditional literature, while "Adventure[’s]" story line falls short of being called true literature. |
