Designing "Firefly"In designing this interactive poem, Larsen, presents her prose alongside visual elements which add yet another dimension to her piece, truly taking her work outside of traditional literary pieces and into the realm of new media. Her images help to set the tone for her poem and creating an enchanting but somber mood. By including these images, Larsen has created an intentional mood which binds the reader within it. Although given the possibility to rearrange and ultimately recreate her own poem, she is able to maintain the mood she herself has set, therefore, helping to guide the reader towards her intended purpose. While the limit for interpretation and new meaning seem endless in this world of non-linear poetry, what is so great about Larsen’s work is that by making the poetry simple, only 5 stanza’s long and 6 stanza’s deep, she is able to guide readers towards her intended purpose and mood. Because of this Larsen never gives up complete control of her piece. This loosely maintained control is most notable at the poems conclusion which always brings you to the final screen where the words “for what he has to say, is not for me” appear. Your interactive poem will always bring you to this screen where the only interactive tools from you to choose from exit you from the site or start you at the beginning.
