COMM 361: ONLINE JOURNALISM
ARTICLE ANALYSIS AND SUMMARY
What Newspapers and Their Web Sites Must Do to Survive
Vin Crosbie, USC Online Journalism Review

This is an excellent article that not only analyzes the currently poor state of newspapers and their online counterparts, but it also provides a solution.  What I found most interesting about this article was that Crosbie is able to debunk the myth that online editions of newspapers are the way of the future.

The reality Crosbie says is that the newspaper industries have spent millions of dollars creating online editions that are read by fewer people, less frequently and less fully than print editions.

Crosbie argues that the problem is that the same 350- year-old model created for analog printing is what is being used to create online content.  Rather than taking advantage of the ability to internet provides to customize news, online news editions are continuing to churn out the same generic stories which are meant to appeal to the widest range of audiences.

Today the technologies of the internet are merely being used for multi-media extras.

Crosbie insists that the only way to save the future of the newspaper it to create editions that satisfy the unique individual interests of each viewer.
