what can be done to eliminate or mitigate the

underlying causes of U.S.-Iran hostility?

Three major issues that exists between Iran and U.S
  • Iran’s nuclear development program
  • alleged aid by Teheran to insurgent forces in Iraq,
  • alleged U.S. efforts to undermine the Iranian regime

The relationship has deteriorated to the point that a disastrous military confrontation,

perhaps provoked by some incident in the Persian Gulf, now seems all too

possible. With these issues on hand, it is essential to look beyond current disputes –

the symptoms of a deeper conflict – and to ask .

Iran's nuclear development program.

Iran has had a nuclear program close to fifty years, which started with the research

reactor purchased from U.S in 1959. U.S is concerned now since the program has

clearly advanced, Iran however is using the technology to enrich uranimum. Even

with Iran's assertions that its program is strictly peaceful and enrichment of

uranimum is necessary for economic fuel cycle in Iran. Despite this reasoning, U.S has

tried to impose international embargo on Iran. Another reason for U.S being

concerned is the Bush administration's emphasis on three “axis of evil” states – Iraq,

Iran, and North Korea– has refocused attention on weapons of mass destruction

(WMD) programs.

Alleged aid by Tehran to Iraq

U.S. officials said that there is no evidence that Iranian officials have ordered in in

Iran had ordered deadly weapons to be sent to Iraq for use against American troops,

As reported by Washington Post, "Bush continued to maintain an aggressive posture

toward Tehran, saying elite Iranian Quds Force operatives were supplying weapons to

insurgents in Iraq."

Alleged U.S efforts to undermine the Iranian regime.

President Bush has authorized to kill and capture Iranian operatives inside Iraq as

to weaken tehran, to undermineits influence in Middle East and force it to give up its

nuclear program. U.S has secretly detained many Iranians agents. "The "catch and

release" policy was designed to avoid escalating tensions with Iran."
