Helen Thomas

“Just keep at it, they have a right to avoid it and you have a right to keep asking.” ~Helen Thomas

Helen Thomas commonly known as the first lady of the press shares her opinions on Presidents and the direction journalists have taken.
Thomas, has been a White House correspondent for many years.  She has reported on every president from John F. Kennedy to the residing President Bush

Thomas spoke with Steve Scully from CSPAN to many journalism students.  She talked about:

  • her past experiences with the White House administration
  • her feelings regarding the present Bush administration
  • and that reporters need to demand more answers

Thomas related her experience with many of the different presidents and their reaction to her as a journalist and as herself.   When describing the way President Kennedy must have felt with regards to the press she said, “He loved us and hated us just as every President.”
Thomas has had a lot of contact with presidents throughout her years.  Chris Fuller a student from George Mason University said he he thought her favorite president to cover had been Kennedy, “ I think Helen Thomas loved covering President Kennedy the most because she seamed to really admire his political knowledge and his ability to challenge the country with new ideas, such as going to the moon.”

Fuller said that he felt Bush has been her least favorite to cover because when she asks a question she seems to be cut off by the President and his administration.

The situations Fuller is referring Scully had shown over the monitors to the students of Thomas asking President Bush in a press conference “What is your real reason to go to war?”  Bush side stepped his answer and has not called on her since then for her to ask a question.

Thomas wants reporters to demand press conferences and answers.  Students asked Thomas how they could get answers when they are avoided, she said “just keep at it, they have a right to avoid it and you have a right to keep asking.”
