"Journalist throw too much stuff away"-Adrian Holovaty
“Journalism is broken,” or so said Editor of New Editorial Innovation at the Washington post, Adrian Holovaty.
Holovaty is NOT referring to:
- Creditability of Newspapers
- Story selection of newspapers
- or even the stalk prices of newspapers dropping
He IS referring to the fact that “Journalists throw too much stuff away”
Christopher Fuller, a Journalism student from George Mason University says that he "totally agrees with Adrian's advocacy towards saving data and information, instead of letting it disappear. All you have to do is look at the man's Washington Post pages, and you can really see how he tells a story in a completely different way with saved data"
Holovaty says that journalist throw information away by compressing it onto one screen in an unstructured form known as “A blob” The issue with a blob, although good for print it is bad for online.
There is a whole bunch of date that journalists collect every time they do a story. The problem is they don’t structure it. A lot of really cool things can be done with date when structured and compiled right.
The National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting is a good site that will teach you how to use date to create a blob.
Blobs can be found in everything from:
- Funerals
- Weddings
- Births
- Sporting events
- Crimes
- Home Sales
- Political events
- So Much More...
Compile date and have them link to one another, find out more information other then just one screen full of blob. Get your reader to come to your site for all the information even if you are having them link else where.
