Hamlet
"Alas, poor Yorick... "

Hamlet is perhaps one of Shakespeare's most well known plays.  This story of a young prince swearing revenge upon his father's murder has been interpreted in on stage and in film, with variations in time period, and as a drama as well as a comedy.  It  is well known for a number of soliloquies including, "to be or not to be... that is the question..."

Hamlet has been performed more than any other play in the world, and more has been written about it than any other literary work.  It is the longest play that Shakespeare wrote and is rarely performed in its entirety.  It has inspired twenty-six ballets, six operas and dozens of musical works from Tchaikovsky to Liszt and Shostakovich.
