SOLUTIONS

The easiest solution to many of the problems associated with computer technology would be to simply not connect to the internet. The internet is a host to a wide array of problems and the only assured way to avoid these problems would be not to connect at all, but that simply is not reasonable or realistic in today’s world. So, some general steps can be made to ensure a “safer” way to use a computer and to protect the precious information that it encloses.

A simple way to protect against viruses would be to purchase or download an accredited virus protection programs. These programs should be used while traveling on the internet, as well as when opening email (Morley & Parker, 2004). Quite simply, a computer should be regularly scanned for viruses with the most updated virus protection software possible.

Spyware and adware can often be eradicated through the use of spyware removal software. Such software can often be found free online or purchased from their respective vendor. If such software is found to be unsuccessful in eliminating all of the spyware or adware, it may be beneficial to reinstall that computer's operating system and its components, returning the system to its original, purchased state. (Pfleeger & Pfleeger, 2003).

A good way to ensure protection from pysical theft would be to simply lock the computer and its peripherals onto a surface of some kind. At the same time, it would be a good idea to lock any important information-carrying devices (i.e. floppy disk, CD's, zip disks) away in a safe. Second and third copies should also be made and stored at various safe locations as well. (Aspinwall, 2005).

The best way to keep yourself out of trouble is to stay informed of the risks. Recognizing potential problems is the first step to protecting against them. So using the internet as a tool to gain information on the risks is a great way to stay ahead of the game. The benefits of informed users are apparent,as Mike Musgrave is able to point out, "Web users, beset with problems from spyware and viruses, are starting to wise up online. A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project reports that online users are trying harder to steer clear of trouble on the Web" (2005).
