PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE IN UNIVERSITY AND K-12 SCHOOL SETTINGS
1991 to Present:
Affiliate Assistant Professor Graduate School of Education George Mason University, Fairfax Virginia, 22030 (since 1995)
During this period I have collaborated with Dr. Mark A. Spikell, Professor of Education (Mathematics) and conducted research and teaching activity in the programs he directs, the Ph.D. and M.Ed. Leadership Programs in Mathematics and Science Education. In research, I have developed with Dr. Spikell four manipulatives and related curriculum-based materials. Two of these manipulatives (Triango! and Dr. Super's Triangles) are patented. They are available from Creative Publications and I have co-authored the four published resource books for teachers for these manipulatives. The other two manipulatives (Trigram and Factor Blocks) are in the process of being patented. Trigram is due in 1997 from Stokes Publishing Co and Factor Blocks is in development.
In addition to design and writing activity with these manipulatives, I have also personally conducted pilot tests of these materials by actually teaching mathematics with the materials to students in various schools in the District of Columbia Public Schools and the Fairfax, Arlington and Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia. I have also developed several other manipulatives, computer applications and curriculum materials for use in the teaching of school-based mathematics.
In teaching, I have actively contributed to several advanced seminar courses taken by both math and science students and served as an advisor for various master and doctoral students. I have lectured and conducted workshops on how to develop manipulatives and associated curriculum materials and how to teach mathematics using manipulatives. I have also audited several advanced doctoral courses and seminars in education and mathematics education including: EDUC 805 Doctoral Seminar, EDCI 895 Emerging Issues in Curriculum and Instruction (Mathematics Education), and EDCI 797 Special Topics in Mathematics Education.
1989 TO PRESENT: MATHEMATICS EDUCATION RESEARCH, PUBLICATIONS AND PRESENTATIONS
Research in mathematics education (K-12), invention of manipulatives and software products, curriculum development, and publication of books for classroom use.based on these materials.
