Restrictions and problems

The main restriction on the WiFi wireless network is the range of the radio signal. The typical range of the signal is between 150 to 800 feet, depending of the surrounding area (It103, pg 189). In open air areas, this range will be up to 800 feet, but when the surrounding area has a lot of obstacles, suck as building, the range will decrease to 150 feet. For those that need to extend the range or strengthen it, the use of extra antennas (It103, pg 189).

According to David Firth, of The Australian, security of the wireless network is the biggest problem. For the network to be safe, it has to be secure, using a WEP encryption. Out of all home networks, 80% of them are unsecured (Firth). When a network is unsecured, anyone who has a wireless card can connect to the network. Once connected, that person can hack into a person’s computer steeling files or even using their computer to upload viruses and send them out over the internet. Recently, in Los Angeles, CA, men plead guilty to sending out pornographic emails using other persons WiFi connection (Firth).
