Distinguished Professor of Information Technology and Engineering

Dr. Ernst Volgenau

Dr. Volgenau is Chairman of SRA International, which he founded in the basement of his home in 1978.  The company grew rapidly and now has about $1.5 billion in revenue, more than 6,000 people, and is listed on the New York Stock Exchange.  For nine years in a row, SRA has been picked by Fortune magazine as one of the best places to work in America.  Dr. Volgenau has received numerous awards, including Executive of the Year and Entrepreneur of the Year for the Washington DC region.

Quantum Computing
and Communicating

Routine quantum computing and communicating may be a decade or more in the future, but quantum effects are already being felt and eventually will have great impact on computer science (including programming) and on engineering.  Transistor size is approaching the dimensions of several thousand molecules, and researchers are experimenting with computational methods using individual atoms and electrons.  At this level a different set of natural laws applies.

In this third annual installment of his Distinguished Professor Lecture Series, Dr. Volgenau will briefly discuss how the laws of quantum physics relate to computing and communicating, and he will describe several approaches currently being explored.
