Once a painting is selected, a screen with a larger image of the work is presented. Underneath the image is the original caption (if any) from the Entartete Kunst exhibit in Munich. This usually included the artist's name and title of the work, although the curators of the exhibit often retitled works to suit their own purposes. The museum owning the work prior to its confiscation by Nazi officials was occasionally named, and the price paid by the institution for the piece. The curators were careful never to reveal that these prices were quoted in inflated Depression-era currency, of course, in an effort to inflame public outrage at the high cost of this degenerate art.
Alongside the painting to the right are the details about the work, including:
- Artist’s name
- Title of work, which may differ from the title given by the exhibit presenters
- Date of creation
- Media and measurements
- The work’s pedigree
- Other works by the artist shown in Entartete Kunst
The following diagram shows the parts of the painting information pages.
