ARTH 320 examines the historical, cultural and religious background of the Islamic world from the 7th Century to the present. This course studies three important forms of art in the Islamic world: the Arts of the Book, monumental architecture, and luxury arts. The course objectives are to increase knowledge of the the art and architecture of the Islamic world through a better understanding of its history, cultures, and religion; to realize the continuities and similarities within that world as well as its unique differences; to become familiar with museums and mosques in the area; and to acquire art-historical methods of interpretation. Class readings and discussion focus on important questions in art history. For example, medieval buildings in Cairo, such as the 9th Century Ibn Tulun Mosque on the right, require extensive preservation work. Who decides how cultural heritage should be protected?
