Technical Document Analysis

The audience of both bioremdiation documents are uninformed readers interested in what was done to clean up the Alaskan oil spill.  The purpose of both documents was to explain that the solution was bioremdiation and then properly define it.  The website's audience is people worried about the arrival of Y2K and its purpose is to relieve those fears by keeping them as updated as possible.
Both are similar in that they seek to provide their audience's with information that addresses possible concerns rather thoroughly.  The difference is that the bioremediation documents focus on one and the website addresses a number of possible concerns.

Online documents are not necessarily presented in its whole form.  Readers are given the documents title and a very brief description of its content.  Printed documents do not have a summary benearth their title.  Visuals and color play a large role in the webiste.  Goofy pictures, different fonts and word sizes, and various columns with wide ranging topics make websites active and play to short attention spans.  However, printed documents generally have minimal colors and visuals.  When they are used, the visual serves to clarify waht the document is saying and is more of a secondary source.

All of the writers use deductive organization.  In the bioremediation documents, the first paragraph mentions what the document is about and then precedes with explanation.  The website is deductive because the point of each piece is immediately revealed after the title.

Shared characteristics were signs of in-depth research, bring informative, concise, readable, and helped the reader understand the subject.  The webiste also helped its audeince solve or deal with a specific problem: Y2K.

I consider "Bioremdiation" to be the most effective form of communication.  Although it did use a lot of scientific terminology that may confuse some readers, the visuals that accompanied the writing clarified its message.  I also like the fact that it prefaced each paragraph or new subject in bold lettering, which helped simplify and organize the information.  The website was too cluttered and busy, and although I like the writing style and diction of "Tiny," it didn't have any visuals or effects to help clarify and organize its information.
