A Paper

A clearly superior paper

Fulfills the assignment in a fresh and individual way

Treats the subject in an original, sophisticated, and complex manner

Enlightens the reader

Demonstrates control of style and use of vivid language

More than competently fulfills all requirements of the assignment and all areas covered on workshop sheet



B Paper

A distinctive, above-average paper

Fulfills the assignment proficiently

Treats the subject in a thorough and thoughtful manner

Engages the reader's interest

Demonstrates general control of style and use of clear language

Competent in all requirements of the assignment and all areas covered on the workshop sheet and more than competent in several



C Paper

An average, acceptable paper

Fulfills the assignment adequately

Treats the subject accurately but obviously and generally

Avoids boring the reader

Demonstrates intermittent control of style but uses generally clear language

Competent in all requirements of the assignment and most areas covered on the workshop sheet.



Ungraded (Should be rewritten to meet basic requirements of assignment. If this is not done by the rewrite deadline, paper will receive a D or F.)

A seriously deficient paper

Attempts to fulfill the assignment, but falls short

Treats the subject insufficiently

Bores or confuses the reader

Demonstrates little or no control of style and often uses confused language

Is deficient in one or more areas of the assignment and several areas covered on the workshop sheet



Comments that indicate F if not rewritten:

"Fails to fulfill assignment."

"Must be rewritten."

"Pervasive stylistic/organizational problems that make it hard to offer individual comments. You must get help from me or from the Writing Center in order to rewrite this."



All grades presume basic competence in mechanics. Consult Correction Record for requirements. Grades are often boosted in borderline cases for exceptional work on Peer Workshop sheets.
