COURSE OBJECTIVES
This is a preprofessional course for those students exploring a major in medical technology. This course is required for medical technology majors and may be used by others only for general elective credit. Major topics will be: 1) Nature of the work and the work environment; 2) positive and negative aspects of the field; 3) historical development of the progressions of medical technology and its interaction with other professions; 4) bioethics; 5) questions related to entrance into the senior year and the nature of that 12 months. There will be a field trip to a clinical laboratory and outside speakers who will introduce you to our affiliates and to the nature of the senior year. You will not learn to perform any laboratory tests or interpret any results or to operate any equipment.
ATTENDANCE AND PROFESSIONALISM
One trait professional schools demand is reliability; one measure of reliability is always being where we are supposed to be when we are supposed to be there. Other characteristics professional schools expect is sensitivity to and respect for others. A student who comes in late, expects to leave early, or reads a paper or chats with neighbors during lecture is not exhibiting traits expected or professionals. Please remember that the only remuneration of outside speakers is a sense that the class members appreciate their time and effort.
The class meets from 4:30 to 6:30 PM most, but not all Wednesdays. NOTE: Any deviations from the announced schedule will be posted to the class listserv and on this web page. Changes for the following week will be posted by Wednesday noon.
STUDENT GROUP PROJECT
The project will involve a written report and an oral presentation. It will be graded as follows: Oral presentation (15%) and written (15%) of the final grade. The project will be discussed in further detail at the first class meeting.
FIELD TRIP
We will be taking a tour of the facilities of the Fairfax-INOVA Hospital. It is located on Gallows Road between Route 50 and Route 236. Park in the garage adjacent to the Women and Children's building. We will meet promptly at 4:45 PM in the lobby of this building. NOTE: This tour may last past 6:30 PM so if you have another class let the instructor know in advance.
