CEIE 360  Introduction to Transportation Engineering

Fall 2002

HOMEWORK POLICY

All homework assignments are due at the next class period, unless a different due date is specified at the time the assignment is made.  Late assignments will be accepted through the beginning of the class the following week, with a 50% reduction in credit for the assignment.  After that date no credit will be available for the assignment.

All problems must be presented in a professional manner.  The desired standard is what would be acceptable for distribution in an engineering office.  Thus, the work must be well organized and neatly laid out.  The problem solution should state what is given, what is required, and must show the solution method and the results obtained.  All work must be clearly labeled, and must be legible.  In the grading spelling, grammar, punctuation, and neatness will be considered, as well as the technical work.

                                                                             LAB  POLICY

Field Procedures

·        Teams: Traffic data collection is a team effort. You will work in groups of 3.

·        Safety: Traffic data collection is very safe if you use common sense. Since we will be collecting data on or near the roadway, please remember that the top priority is your safety. Follow these safety rules:

o       Always be attentive to your surroundings.

o       In general, do not take undue risk in any data collection.  None of our labs will require walking onto the road while traffic is moving.

o       Let your teammates watch for you when you are occupied observing traffic, taking measurements, recording data, etc.  There will usually be a team member free to perform this safety lookout function.

·        Equipment: Specialized data collection equipment will be available for some of the laboratory exercises.  Your group will check out the equipment, and is responsible for it while it is in your possession.  Some software will also be available for checkout.

·        Study Material: Most of the study material needed for data collection will be covered in the lecture period. Any additional material deemed necessary will be made available to you.

Study Sites

Several of the laboratory sessions will require data collection at a signalized intersection.  Each group will be assigned to one intersection on or near the George Mason campus to use as the study site for all of these sessions.  These assignments are as follows:

  Lab Group            Location

            1            Braddock Road/Roberts Road

            2            Braddock Road/Nottoway River Lane

            3            Braddock Road/Roanoke River Road

            4            Braddock Road/Ox Road

            5            Ox Road/University Drive

            6            University Drive/George Mason Blvd.

In most cases it is desired to collect traffic data for one hour during a time of peak traffic movement.  The following time periods are suggested:

            4:00 to 5:00 p.m.

            6:45 to 7:45 p.m.

            7:15 to 8:15 a.m.

            8:15 to 9:15 a.m.

            12:00 to 1:00 p.m.
