ADVANCED WRITING

In-Class Essay

You have an hour and a half to write a compare and contrast essay that explains how to find both a book and a periodical article on the topic of learning and robotics using the Mason library system, specifically Fenwick Library. Be sure to include specific, significant details about the Mason system since your audience (the person you assume you are writing this essay for) is an ELI student who has never tried to find a book or periodical article here at Mason. You may word process your essay or write it by hand (in a Blue Book that you can buy in the bookstore in the Johnson Center -- they are near the Scantron forms up by the cash registers).

Grammar and spelling are important, but you should focus on the organization and explanation of your ideas more than these two points. Your essay grade will be based on content.  If you have excessive grammar and/or spelling errors, you will be asked to complete a correction sheet for the essay (due two weeks after the graded essay is returned to you). Therefore, I suggest you budget time to proofread your essay before you turn it in to me.

You may use an off-line dictionary and/or a thesaurus. No internet connections (web, ftp, telnet, e-mail, IM) or phone connectins (texting, web) will be permitted during the exam time. You may refer to the posters we made in class if you would like to.
