Jeffrey

This is my four year old son, Jeffrey.  He was diagnosed with autism at the age of two.   He has just begun to learn sign language and has jumped from one word at a time - only as needed to get what he wants - to full sentences in sign language.

I've chosen this picture because to me his eyes are the punctum.  He's smiling, he's just gotten done playing in the sprinkler and he's about to go down a slide - just like any other child - but when you look at his eyes they are somewhere else.  It's possible that he was just looking at me, or his dogs playing in the yard, but this small detail - this minor disconnect - to me shows exactly what his autism is.  He is by all accounts a normal child - fun, happy, energetic, curious - but there is a barrier there that prevents language from entering and leaving his mind.  He doesn't think in words.  He thinks in pictures

I've written the story of learning that he is autistic What You Get
