130's main focus is on critical thinking. The students were challenged
to dig deeper into the readings and fully understand the concepts. We
were taught several main ideas, and then, we attended different
activities, movies, or lectures that showed those ideas at work. One of
the hardest things for me this semester was understanding those ideas
and seeing them at work in the different programs. I have always
struggled with critical thinking, and it was hard for me to apply the
concepts to the programs we went to. The second integrative project
helped me learn how to dig deeper into the readings, and it helped me
to understand and apply the concepts to things going on in the world
today. The integrative project helped me look critically at the readings. I took the writings of Tertullian and compared what he said to the ideology of Yoga. For example in my paper, I said that Tertullian would consider Yoga a heresy because it goes against Jesus Christ. Then, I backed my statement with a quote from Tertullian. I had to dig into the reading to find out what Tertullians reaction to Yoga would be if he was alive today. Then, I explained that Tertullian believed this way because of it his ideology. I was able to dig deeper into the readings and understand the ideologies of Yoga and Christianity. This project also helped me understand the concept of ideologies. We discussed the definition of an ideology in class, but I was still struggling to fully understand the definition. In my paper, I took Yoga and proved based on the definition we discussed in class that it was an ideology. I went point by point and explained why Yoga is considered an ideology. By doing this, I finally understood the definition. Once I understood the definition, I was able to take Tertullian's Christian ideology and defend his beliefs against the practice of Yoga. The second integrative project helped me understand the concepts discussed in class. |
Finally,
the project helped me apply the concepts I learned in class to things
going on in the world. For example, I was able to see how contact zones
changed Yoga. At first, Yoga was part of a religious practice, but when
it was placed in the western culture, it became a workout program. The
religious aspect of Yoga was no longer talked about even though it is
still a part of Yoga. I finally saw that change, and the idea of
contact zones became more real to me. Contact zones didn't just happen
in the past, but they are still occuring all over our world today. The second integrative project helped me learn how to dig deeper into the readings, and it helped me understand and apply concepts to things going on in the world. This piece shows my development as a student over the semester. At the begining of the semester, I had a hard time looking deeper into the readings and thinking critically about them, but this project helped me do that. Similarly, I had been struggling to understand the concepts we learned in class. I kind of understood them, but I was not fully comprehending them. This project helped me understand ideologies and what makes something an ideology. Finally, when I don't understand a concept, I can not see or apply it to things going on in the world. With the second integrative project, I was able to understand the concept of contact zones and apply it to Yoga. Over the course of this semester, I have become a lot stronger in these areas where before I was very weak. |
