The final in class assignment of the semester was a group poster presentation. My group was given the Kori Bustard, the largest flying bird in the world, to study. We had to research several different aspects of the bird. First, we had to introduce the bird and explain where it was located, how many there are, and some interesting facts about the bird. Then, we had to give a scientific background of the animal and show how it evolved. Next, we ahd to describe some policies that were in place to protect the bird, and finally, we ahd to discuss areas that needed to be fixed in the policies. This group presentation helped me improve my group interaction skills and my communication skills.
My group interaction skills were improved because we were able to divide up tasks to get the job done.  Everyone was given a specific job to do. When we met for the first time, Kirsten and Laura researched for information while I brought the materials we needed to create the poster. I wrote down sources while Jacob wrote down the information that Kirsten and Laura found. Once we had all the information, Laura edited the material, and I wrote the works cited page. Once everything for the poster was completed, we all put the poster together and discussed who would talk about each section. By collaborating together and dividing tasks, we were able to work efficiently and get the job done.
My communication skills were also improved when we presented our poster. We only had to present in front of Professor Gilmore which made the presentation less nerve raking. I felt as if we were having a normal conversation with him rather than being graded on we said. This made it more comfortable to talk. I was able to present my poster section on policies without note cards which was a big step for me. Normally, I like to have note cards with me just in case I forget something or get too nervous. I was able to present my information clearly, and I was also able to answer several questions about the bird. For example, Professor Gilmore asked how tall the birds are, and I told him that they can grow up to five feet tall. I was able to clearly communicate my ideas to Professor Gilmore.
The poster presentation helped me improve my group interaction skills and my communication skills. At the beginning of the semester, NCLC 120 focused more on individual improvement. It focused more on critical thinking, aesthetic awareness, and communication. As the semester progressed, There was more of a focus on group work. It focused on group interaction and communication. Throughout the semester, I grew in all of these areas. There were periods of questioning, but I was able to push through to the end.
