Trinity created a sense of community
through its athletic teams. First of all, by joining the basketball
team, everyone was agreeing to be a part of that community and follow
the rules that went along with the game. This is similar to Rousseau's
idea of a Social Contract. He believed that in order to create a
community, people had to divest themselves of their rights and follow
the rules of the community (Rousseau). Once we became a team, we all worked together to win basketball games. During games, we worked together and helped each other out. We al had different skills, but each skill was important. Some teammates could only play defense while others were great shooters. Both skills were needed to win the game. If we could not stop the other team from scoring, we would lose. Similarly, if we could not score, we would lose. By using the different skills of each player, we became a stronger and more powerful team. It created a sense of security because there were four other players on the court who could help you out if you got trapped. We supported each other and made sure that everyone's skills were used. Trinity taught me how to become a part of a community as well as work in on. I learned to give up some of my rights to play on teams, and I learned to follow the rules of each team that I joined. I learned to work with many differnet kinds of people, and Trinity taught me to sppreciate them all. Trinity taught me to use my talents and skills for the benefit of the team and not just myself. |
