Doris Goodwin

Pulitzer Prize winner, acclaimed Presidential Historian, and bestselling author, Doris Kearns Goodwin spoke to college students from Pace, Denver and George Mason University via a distant learning program hosted by C-SPAN and Steve Scully.

She spoke of mainly two things.

  1. The importance of History

                        &

2. The current presidential race

1. She claimed her love for history came in her childhood years, when her father would ask her to record scores for the Brooklyn Dodgers, so he can know the outcome when he came back home from work.

“It made me feel like I was telling him a wonderful story,” said Goodwin. “It was like magic.”

From childhood and onward, history fascinated Goodwin.

She expressed her disappointment however, that less and less kids are finding history to be an interesting subject anymore. She feels as though the schooling system is to blame for this disliking of history and that something needs to be done about it.

History she said is full of drama and excitement and gives people a sense of where they came from. But schools nowadays fail to excite students about their history and therefore history is considered boring for many students.

2. After speaking about the importance of history and her experiences with writing her latest book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln”, she moved on to talk about the current presidential race.

She described the candidates running for the presidential race as “classy” and discussed how whoever wins the race is going to bring something special along with them.

Obama would be the first black man, while Clinton would be the first female president. Tomorrows history is being written today!
