Internet Literacy
The mission of this workshop is to educate about the basics of the internet utilizing hands on techniques. In this workshop we plan to incorporate and familiarize our clients with basic internet terms while exploring search engines, privacy issues, email, and virus protection.

      • Copyright has two purposes:
    • ·         1. To protect the authors right to obtain commercial benefit from valuable work
    • ·         2. To protect authors right to control how a work is used
      • Overall copyright law makes it technically illegal to reproduce almost any new creative work (other than fair use) without permission. If the work is unregistered and has no real commercial value, it gets very little protection.
      • Fair use allows copies to be made without either payment or permission under certain conditions. It includes the right to copy for the purpose of research, teaching, journalism, criticism, parody, and library activities.
      • Fair use is not an exact doctrine. The court decides if the right to comment overrides the copyright on an individual basis in each case.

  • Image After is a large online free photo collection. You can download and use any image or texture from their site and use it in your own work, for either personal or commercial purpose.

 

Ways to Minimize Identity Theft When Submitting Your Personal Information Online

  • Evaluate the site to determine if it’s Legitimate and Secure. You can accomplish this by:
  • Finding out about its Reputation.
  • Referrals through friends

*If it’s a shopping site you also want to consider:

  • Your experiences of previous purchases through that site
  • Reviews and Comments by other shopper’s found online
  • For accounts that consist of using passwords, such as e-mail accounts, create a password that will be hard to guess…that way your information is protected.
  • Usually a combination of capital letters, lower case letters, and numbers is effective.

For Shopping Sites:

  • Understand the retailer’s refund policy before making a purchase.
  • For retailers without refund policies, consumers can use

Buyer protection sites.

  • Use a secure checkout and payment process.
  • To know if a retailer is using a safe checkout, look for logos from companies like VeriSign or Trust E.
  • You can use Pay pal, which is a site that allows you to pay for something without having to share your financial information with sellers. For more information about this free account, please go to http://www.paypal.com/
  • If an offer sounds too good to be true or highly suspicious, then Usually It Is.\

There are two different types of e-mails that you should look out for. The first one is spoof e-mails, and the second one is spam.

Spoof

Spoof, also known as Phishing (pronounced as fishing), “are e-mails made to look like they’ve come from legitimate companies but that actually come from identity thieves.” (definition provided by paypal.com) Usually they require you to click on their site and ask you to insert personal information.

Spam

Spam is junk messages that you receive in your e-mail. Sometimes by opening these e-mails you’re at risk in catching viruses.

§          There are well over 50,000 Windows viruses in existence, with about 250 new ones appearing every month. I want o tell you about three free ways to decrease the threats on your computer.

§          Ad-Aware is a free program from Lavasoft that detects and removes software on a user's computer that is determined to be spyware.

§          Spyware is malicious software that takes partial control of the computers operation without consent of the user/owner.

§          Ad-aware also detects a multitude of viruses and aggressive advertising.

Spybot - Search & Destroy is a free program that can detect and remove a multitude of adware files and modules (web usage tracks) from your computer.

§          adware is any software application in which advertising banners are displayed while the program is running. adware can be viewed through pop-up windows or through a bar that appears on a computer screen.

§          The justification for adware is that it helps recover programming development cost and helps to hold down the cost for the user. adware has been criticized because it usually includes elements that tracks users personal information and passes it on to third parties, without the user's authorization or knowledge.

    • AVG – free software
      • AVG Free Edition is the well-known antivirus protection tool for home users for the life of the product. Rapid virus database updates are also available for the lifetime of the product.
