Introduction to Computer Literacy
The mission of this workshop is to discuss and educate about the computer basics. In this workshop we plan to familiarize our clients with basic computer hardware and saving devices, examine the difference between Macs and PCs, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of desktop publishing and explore business card creation.

I. Computer Lingo

    • Macintosh computers have significant advantages over Windows PCs with regard to

    1. Desktop publishing is basically the do-it-yourself of most things you can do electronically. The programs are generally cheap and easy to use.

      • People who find outsourcing too expensive, inflexible, and time consuming and complex
      • You can easily create (business cards, stationary, t-shirts, brochures, posters, news letters, newspapers, books, music, videos, basic website creation, and other media) on your own right from your home/work computer.

      • Advantage: It is convenient and depending on the use and need of the project it is more cost effective.
      • Disadvantage: Depending on your resources, time, skill, and imagination your projects sometimes look unprofessional or end up being very expensive.

      • You can create professional looking projects, you have more flexibility with what you can do because the program offers more features, your projects usually are better quality, and you could outsource much easier.
      • Industry standard programs are generally very expensive, the programs take up a lot of space on your computer, and they are much more difficult to learn how to use them
